H2 View: 8GW green hydrogen project to situate Chile at the forefront of the international hydrogen economy
With the significant potential South America holds in producing hydrogen from renewable energy, Total Eren has started development of an 8GW green hydrogen megaproject in Chile.
Total Eren, the dedicated renewable energy subsidiary of EREN Groupe and an Independent Power Producer that develops, finances, invests in, builds and operates renewable energy power plants (solar, wind, hydro) worldwide, has started development of an 8GW green hydrogen megaproject in Chile. The large-scale green hydrogen project, dubbed H2 Magallanes, will utilize 10GW of wind installed capacity coupled with 8GW of electrolysis to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia for export to global markets. Total Eren, which is 30% owned by Total Energies S.A., hopes to conduct studies in order to officially launch the project in 2025, with 2027 being the target in starting hydrogen production. Total Eren has secured large private lands in the Magallenes region, situated in Southern Chile, which currently benefits from some of the best onshore wind conditions in the world in addition to direct access to the sea.
